Monk's teaching platform
I made this piece for Serlingpa Meditation Center in New Bedford, Massachusetts. A Buddhist monk sits cross-legged on this platform when teaching and places his books on the shelf. The dentil molding is a decorative element common to both Buddhist temples in Tibet and New England homes, and the shelf brackets are reminiscent of the vajra, or lightning bolt, a Buddhist symbol of compassion.
